Now, a US based startup is poised to test a controversial concept: using space-based mirrors to deliver daylight on demand.
Reflect Orbital, a California firm, has received the green light from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to pilot a satellite equipped with an enormous 18-meter mirror. The ambitious goal is to bounce sunlight back to Earth, potentially powering solar installations and illuminating terrestrial areas after sunset. This initiative comes on the heels of a $20 million Series A funding round completed in May 2025, earmarked for accelerating the satellite's development. The debut Eärendil-1 demonstration satellite is slated for launch into low Earth orbit before the year's end.
The FCC has acknowledged the project's potential, suggesting it could represent a "potentially groundbreaking technology" that reinforces American leadership in space exploration. Once operational, the satellite will deploy a vast, thin-film reflector. This mirror is intended to redirect solar rays onto targeted terrestrial zones, spanning 5 to 6 kilometers in width. Reflect Orbital claims the intensity of this reflected light will be adjustable, capable of mimicking conditions from a full moon to high noon.
The commercial vision is clear: Reflect Orbital intends to market this directed sunlight, with pricing potentially reaching $5,000 per hour. The service could be utilized by municipalities for street lighting without grid dependency or by solar farms seeking to extend their operational hours into the night.
Scientific Scrutiny and Environmental Alarms
Despite the technological promise, the venture has ignited fierce opposition from the scientific community. Concerns are mounting over the potential for these powerful light beams to cause temporary blindness in pilots, disrupt sensitive astronomical observations, and interfere with natural biological rhythms. Scientists warn that such abnormal light pollution could negatively impact plant growth cycles, disrupt human and animal sleep patterns, affect hormone regulation, and even alter the migratory paths of nocturnal species.
The delicate balance of marine ecosystems is also a point of concern. The abnormal light patterns could disrupt the seasonal cycles of plants and interfere with the rhythms of marine phytoplankton, which form the base of crucial ocean food webs.
