Gunnison Copper update lifts project value to near $2B - Commodities | PriceONN
The project dwarves Gunnison’s existing producer – the Johnson Camp mine (JCM) that started output last year.

Gunnison Copper Project Valuation Soars

Gunnison Copper (TSX: GCU) has released an updated preliminary economic assessment (PEA) for its flagship Gunnison project in Arizona, revealing a substantial increase in its estimated value. The revised assessment propels the project forward into prefeasibility studies, permitting processes, and financing arrangements.

The updated PEA, made public on Wednesday, indicates a net present value (NPV) of $1.95 billion, calculated using an 8% discount rate and a copper price assumption of $4.60 per pound. This represents a significant surge compared to the initial PEA published in 2024. The projected mine life has also been extended by three years, now spanning 21 years.

Furthermore, the post-tax internal rate of return (IRR) has seen an increase, climbing to 23% from the previous 21%. However, the initial capital expenditure has also risen by 18%, reaching $1.54 billion. The project site is strategically located approximately 105 kilometers east of Tucson.

"The updated PEA underscores the scale and compelling economics of the Gunnison copper project," CEO Stephen Twyerould stated. "Gunnison offers shareholders meaningful exposure to a large-scale, long-life US copper asset."

Enhancements Driving Increased Value

The Gunnison project significantly overshadows Gunnison's current operational mine, the Johnson Camp mine (JCM), which commenced production last year. Its scale is approximately eight times larger, a factor that will be crucial as the Western United States faces a predicted copper shortage amid escalating demand. Industry analysts estimate that around 60 new copper mines are required within the next four years, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.

According to CEO Twyerould, approximately 83% of the $692 million increase in NPV compared to the initial PEA is attributable to operational improvements implemented at the site. These enhancements encompass the incorporation of the high-grade Strong & Harris satellite deposit, material sorting techniques, and overall optimization initiatives. The Strong & Harris deposit is projected to contribute roughly 25 million tonnes to the open-pit and heap leach operation.

The updated study anticipates a total output of 3.2 billion pounds of copper cathode throughout the mine's lifespan, with an average annual production of 174 million pounds during the first 15 years. Similar to JCM, the Gunnison project will employ solvent extraction and electrowinning processing methods.

Project Background and Market Impact

The PEA update follows a year marked by significant milestones for Gunnison. JCM became the first operation to produce copper cathode utilizing Rio Tinto (NYSE, LSE, ASX: RIO) venture partner Nuton's sulphide bioleaching technology. Prior to this, Gunnison produced its own cathode, establishing JCM as the newest red metal producer in the United States.

On Thursday, company shares experienced a 10% surge, reaching C$0.61 apiece, before declining by 3.3% on Friday morning to C$0.59 apiece in Toronto. This values the company at approximately C$254 million ($186 million).

While JCM is currently more advanced, the Gunnison project boasts substantial resources. According to the initial PEA prepared by Excelsior Mining, the project contains 831.6 million measured and indicated tons grading 0.31% copper, equivalent to 5.1 billion pounds of copper. Inferred resources total 79.6 million tons grading 0.2% copper for 325 million pounds of contained metal. The new PEA did not update the Gunnison resource estimate.
