Global Tensions Ease, Tech Sector Responds

A significant shift in market sentiment occurred at the start of August, fueled by a de-escalation of geopolitical risks. President Donald Trump's announcement to halt a planned military action against Iran, coupled with an expressed willingness to re-engage in negotiations, sent ripples through global markets. This development was immediately reflected in a noticeable drop in oil prices, as the immediate threat of supply disruptions receded.

Market participants interpreted this cooling of international friction as a powerful signal that the upward pressure on inflation might also begin to ease. This perception provided a much-needed boost to investor confidence, encouraging a renewed embrace of riskier assets. The backdrop of a stable interest rate environment, following the Federal Reserve's decision on 29 July to maintain the benchmark rate between 3.5% and 3.75%, further solidified this positive outlook, even though the decision was not unanimous among policymakers.

These converging factors created a fertile ground for a resurgence in investor demand, particularly for high-capitalization technology stocks. The combination of reduced geopolitical uncertainty and a predictable monetary policy stance helped to restore a sense of stability, prompting a rotation back into growth-oriented sectors.

100 Navigates Technical Terrain

From a technical standpoint, the 100 index (tracked as NDXm on some platforms) had been navigating a challenging short-term downtrend since mid-July. This was visually represented by a descending trendline, under which the index dipped towards the 27,100 area, encountering a zone of support indicated in green on charts.

However, the recent shift in global sentiment triggered a powerful reversal. The index not only broke decisively above its prior downtrend channel but also managed to reclaim approximately half of its earlier losses. Following a period of sideways consolidation, a new market structure has emerged. Currently, the index is trading above its upper profile boundary, a key level identified at 28,600.

Looking ahead, the path of least resistance appears to be upwards, with the previous trend's foundation located at 29,200, marked as a significant resistance zone in red. Should the index falter from current levels, traders will be closely watching several critical technical indicators. The Point of Control (POC), representing the price level with the highest trading volume, stands at 28,400 and acts as the nearest area of significant activity. Below this, the lower boundary of the market profile at 27,750 and the green support level near 27,250 (close to the trend's lowest point) present potential areas of interest for buyers.

Momentum indicators offer a mixed, yet cautiously optimistic, signal. The RSI is currently reading 64, with moving averages at 58 and 49. While the oscillator suggests potential for further upward movement, the slower moving average's position within neutral territory means the bullish signal remains unconfirmed, underscoring the need for vigilance.

Reading Between the Lines

The immediate trajectory of the 100 appears intrinsically linked to the ongoing diplomatic efforts concerning Iran. Any signs of renewed friction or a breakdown in negotiations could swiftly reignite selling pressure on the index. Conversely, sustained progress on the diplomatic front may unlock further upside potential, paving the way for the index to challenge higher price territories.

This dynamic highlights the delicate balance between geopolitical stability and market performance. Investors are now tasked with weighing the probability of continued peace against the potential for renewed conflict, a factor that will likely dictate short-term market movements. The interplay between global events and investor psychology is critical, especially for growth-sensitive sectors like technology.

The Federal Reserve's stance on interest rates also remains a crucial undercurrent. While rates are currently stable, any hints of future policy shifts, driven by evolving inflation data or economic conditions, could introduce volatility. For now, the market appears to be pricing in a period of relative calm, allowing technology stocks to benefit from the reduced risk premium.
