Why Trump Wants Magnets More Than Gold - Commodities | PriceONN
Beginning in 2027, the Pentagon will prohibit the use of Chinese-origin rare earth magnet materials in U.S. military platforms. That mandate cuts through the American defense industrial base, compelling manufacturers to verify the origin of the rare earth metal inside their systems–all the way back to the beginning of the processing chain. Defense giants like Lockheed Martin are overhauling their magnet supply chains to avoid non-compliance in 2027, warning that rare earth sourcing restrictions...

Pentagon's Rare Earth Mandate

The United States Department of Defense is set to implement a significant restriction in 2027, prohibiting the incorporation of rare earth magnets originating from China in any U.S. military equipment. This directive has far-reaching implications for the American defense industry, compelling manufacturers to meticulously trace the origin of these critical materials throughout their supply networks.

Defense industry giants such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman are actively restructuring their supply chains to ensure compliance by the 2027 deadline. These companies are emphasizing the need for complete traceability, extending all the way back to the mining source across their extensive network of suppliers. The challenge lies in qualifying suppliers in a market historically dominated by Chinese rare earth processing.

REalloys' North American Solution

REalloys (NASDAQ: ALOY), based in Euclid, Ohio, is positioning itself as a key player in this evolving landscape. They have achieved a significant milestone by establishing industrial-scale production of magnet-grade heavy rare earth metals within North America, specifically tailored for defense applications. This addresses a critical vulnerability in the supply chain, where the conversion of rare earth oxides into usable metals has been overwhelmingly concentrated in China for decades, even when the initial mining and oxide separation occurred within the United States.

REalloys aims to bridge this gap, creating a secure and reliable North American supply chain. Their strategy involves securing upstream resources through:

  • Ownership of the Hoidas Lake rare earth project in Saskatchewan, Canada.
  • A letter of intent for 15% of future production from Greenland's Tanbreez project.
  • Agreements to access material from the Kokbulak project in Kazakhstan.
  • An alliance linked to the Araxá project in Brazil.

These primary sources are supplemented by recycled permanent magnet material and industrial scrap, all processed at their Euclid facility.

Meeting the National Security Deadline

REalloys, in collaboration with SRC, is targeting an annual output of approximately 400 tonnes of rare earth metals by the end of 2027, with plans to scale up to around 600 tonnes as Phase 1 progresses. This timeline aligns with the compliance requirements facing U.S. defense contractors. The company's strategic importance is further underscored by the appointment of retired General Jack Keane to its board, highlighting the critical role of rare earth metallization in defense planning.

Financial backing is also aligning with this strategic imperative. The Export-Import Bank has expressed interest in providing up to $200 million in funding for rare earth processing expansion related to this platform, while the Defense Production Act offers additional avenues for accelerating domestic capacity. This concerted effort aims to ensure that the U.S. military has access to the necessary materials to power its weapon systems without relying on foreign sources.

As Tim Johnston, co-founder of REalloys, stated,

Metallization is the least developed part of the value chain outside China. We’ve already solved the hardest part proving that rare earth metallization and alloying can be done domestically to the specifications real customers require.

The success of REalloys in scaling up its operations will be crucial in determining the smoothness of this transition and safeguarding the U.S. defense supply chain.
