I've been using a scaling strategy with XAUUSD lately to manage risk. I'll typically enter with a small initial position, and then add to it as the price moves in my favor, or against it within defined limits. For example, I might start with 0.25% risk, and then add another 0.25% at key levels. If it goes against me, I'll add another small amount, lowering my average entry price. This allows me to potentially capitalize on larger moves while limiting my initial exposure. I always set a hard stop-loss though!
