The current XAUUSD price action around the 5180-5190 region is quite interesting, sitting right on the 50 SMA and just below the 20 SMA. The neutral RSI at 49.5 suggests we're in a bit of a tug-of-war. For a scalper like myself, this tight consolidation often precedes a move, but patience is key here. I'm waiting for a clear break above 5190 or below 5180 before committing to a short-term direction.

Also, keep an eye on D1 closes. Even for scalping, the higher timeframes can give crucial context to these intraday moves.

A break above the 20 SMA near 5187 could potentially see a quick push towards the daily pivot at 5203 but I'd be very mindful of the Bollinger upper band around 5212. Conversely a drop below the 50 SMA could test the lower Bollinger band. Tight stops are absolutely essential in these conditions. The volatility can pick up quickly.
