FTSE 100: Correction Has Ended, but a New Impulse Has Yet to Form - Forex | PriceONN
Fundamental backdrop The UK inflation report for April, published on 20 May, delivered unexpectedly positive figures: annual inflation slowed to 2.8% in April 2026 from 3.3% in March, coming in below the consensus forecast of 3.0% and marking the lowest reading since March last year. Market Rebound Stumbles Despite Inflation Surprise

The United Kingdom's latest inflation figures have presented a mixed picture for investors. On 20 May, official data revealed that annual inflation cooled to 2.8% in April. This marks a significant deceleration from March's 3.3% and undershot economists' expectations of 3.0%, reaching its lowest point since March of the previous year. While this easing of price pressures might suggest a reprieve, the market's reaction indicates a belief that this relief is likely transient.

Several underlying factors are contributing to this cautious outlook. The ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the unresolved conflict involving Iran, continue to cast a shadow over energy markets, keeping oil prices elevated. This sustained pressure on commodities complicates the broader inflation narrative. Furthermore, the Bank of England is adopting a measured approach to monetary policy. Officials appear hesitant to commit to interest rate reductions, preferring to await further inflation data before signaling any shift in their stance.

Navigating Technical Headwinds

The FTSE 100 index has experienced a period of correction. From early April through mid-May, the benchmark index saw a notable downturn from the 10,700 region. While demand emerged around the 10,150 level, preventing a steeper slide, price action became compressed within this narrow band. A more recent development saw the index breach an established descending trendline to the upside in the latter part of May.

However, this upward momentum has faltered. The index struggled to maintain a position above the upper limits of its current trading profile, hovering near 10,450. Recent trading sessions have shown quotations oscillating between the key volume concentration area and this upper boundary. The area between 10,380 and 10,390 represents the 'point of control' (POC), indicating the price level with the highest trading volume and thus significant interest.

Looking ahead, significant hurdles appear for buyers should the index push higher. The 10,530 zone is identified as a potential area of strong resistance. Conversely, if selling pressure re-emerges, the lower profile boundary at 10,250 could become a focal point. Below that, the 10,150 level stands as the next major technical reference point.

Technical indicators offer further nuance. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently positioned at 43, underscoring a lack of strong buying conviction. Crucially, the RSI remains below both its 51-period and 54-period moving averages, casting doubt on the sustainability of the recent trendline breakout. This divergence between price action and momentum indicators suggests that the next significant directional impulse has yet to materialize.

Reading Between the Lines

The recent break of the descending trendline is a technical positive, yet the prevailing weakness in momentum, as shown by the RSI's position, tempers immediate optimism. The market's next significant move appears contingent on the Bank of England's forward guidance. Investors will be scrutinizing any signals regarding the future trajectory of interest rates, particularly in light of the current, albeit possibly temporary, dip in inflation.

The interplay between easing inflation, persistent geopolitical risks affecting oil prices, and the central bank's cautious policy stance creates a complex environment for the FTSE 100. Traders are likely weighing these competing factors, leading to the current range-bound trading. The market is essentially in a holding pattern, awaiting clearer direction from economic data and central bank commentary.

The core question remains whether the current inflation slowdown is a precursor to sustained disinflation, allowing the Bank of England to pivot towards looser monetary policy, or a temporary blip overshadowed by external price pressures. The market's inability to decisively break higher suggests that uncertainty still dominates investor sentiment, making the upcoming Bank of England communications a critical event.
