EUR/CAD Rally Continues as ECB Officials Prepare Markets for June Hike - Forex | PriceONN
EUR/CAD extended its near term rally today as increasingly hawkish rhetoric from senior European Central Bank officials continued pushing markets toward pricing a June rate hike, while falling oil prices added renewed pressure on Canadian Dollar. The pair resumed its rebound from 1.5941 and is now approaching the key 1.6148 resistance zone, with broader momentum […] The post EUR/CAD Rally Continues as ECB Officials Prepare Markets for June Hike appeared first on ActionForex.

Euro Gains Traction on Hawkish ECB Stance

The EUR/CAD cross has resumed its ascent, building on recent gains as a unified chorus of senior European Central Bank policymakers prepares the market for a potential interest rate hike in June. This hawkish pivot from the ECB is coinciding with renewed weakness in the Canadian Dollar, largely influenced by a significant slide in oil prices.

The currency pair, having found support around the 1.5941 mark, is now firmly targeting the 1.6148 resistance level. Current market momentum suggests a strong bias towards further appreciation, indicating that the recent consolidation might be nearing its conclusion.

ECB Communication Fuels Euro Strength

Driving the Euro's strength is a palpable shift in the ECB's communication strategy this week. Francois Villeroy de Galhau, a key member of the ECB's Governing Council, articulated a clear mandate today: policymakers are prepared to "do what is necessary to bring inflation back to 2% in the medium term." He specifically highlighted the critical need to curb energy price shocks from embedding into broader inflation expectations.

"We should be extremely vigilant about possible second-round effects," Villeroy cautioned, adding a definitive "have no doubt we will act as much as necessary." These remarks echo and amplify the hawkish undertones previously set by ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane and Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel.

Philip Lane had earlier indicated that the central bank anticipates a further upward adjustment to its inflation forecasts. He also signaled comfort with the current market pricing for more restrictive monetary policy. Isabel Schnabel adopted an even more direct tone, asserting that "looking through is no longer an option" and explicitly stating, "a rate hike in June will be needed."

Canadian Dollar Pressured by Oil Slump

The Canadian Dollar, meanwhile, finds itself under mounting pressure as the oil market experiences a significant downturn. Hopes for a potential agreement between the United States and Iran, which could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, are weighing heavily on crude oil benchmarks. Brent crude has seen a sharp retreat from its recent highs, now trading in the mid-$90s per barrel.

Compounding the Loonie's woes, market participants widely expect the Bank of Canada to maintain its current interest rate policy for the remainder of the year, offering little in the way of supportive monetary policy signals.

Reading Between the Lines

The divergence in central bank intentions is creating a clear technical picture for EUR/CAD. The current upward move, stemming from the 1.5914 low, is pushing towards the significant 1.6148 resistance. A decisive breach of this level would strongly suggest that the prior consolidation phase, which originated from 1.6247, has concluded. This would pave the way for a resumption of the larger uptrend that began at 1.5610.

Should the pair decisively clear 1.6247, the next significant target would be the 1.6335 level, representing a 61.8% projection based on the move from 1.5610 to 1.6247, projected from the 1.5941 pivot. However, a slip back below the minor support at 1.6036 could temporarily stall the bullish narrative, potentially leading to a period of sideways trading before further direction becomes clear.

This dynamic highlights the interconnectedness of global monetary policy and commodity markets. Traders are closely monitoring the ECB's resolve in tackling inflation against the backdrop of a softening energy market, which directly impacts the Canadian Dollar's trajectory.
