Just as the industry was projecting robust expansion, with Shell forecasting global LNG demand to approach 700 million tons annually by 2050-a substantial 65% leap from 2025 levels-the reality on the ground paints a different picture. Shell's earlier projection highlighted gas and LNG as key pillars for energy security, citing their inherent flexibility. Indeed, the advent of liquefaction technology transformed natural gas into a truly global tradeable commodity.
However, recent events have starkly revealed the limitations of this flexibility. The conflict has led to a force majeure declaration impacting Qatar's massive liquefaction hub, effectively reducing LNG exports from the Persian Gulf to a mere trickle. This scarcity, though small in volume, is keenly felt by energy importers worldwide.
A Premium Fueled by Fear
As the northern hemisphere's seasonal demand peaks, energy importers are desperately seeking any available supply, pushing prices to stratospheric levels. The premium attached to secured LNG cargoes has climbed dramatically, leading some analysts to believe that this conflict-driven price surge could permanently alter the long-term outlook for this superchilled fuel.
The numbers paint a stark picture. Since January, the price of LNG has effectively doubled. As energy consultancy Gas Strategies' chief executive, Pat Breen, observed, buyers who paid approximately $10 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in January found themselves paying between $20 and $22/MMBtu for much of July. This steep escalation inevitably impacts demand.
Even nations with limited financial capacity, such as Pakistan, have resorted to paying these elevated prices to secure vital gas supplies during peak demand. Concurrently, much of Asia, including major LNG importer Japan, has seen a resurgence in coal-fired power generation as a more economical alternative to expensive liquefied gas. This represents a clear instance of demand destruction driven by prohibitive pricing.
Data from Gas Strategies suggests a potential 8% dip in global LNG demand this year compared to 2025 figures if the constrained flow from the Persian Gulf persists throughout the year. The probability of such a scenario unfolding appears significant, especially with recent attacks on LNG carriers in the Strait of Hormuz indicating that a return to normal energy trade through this critical chokepoint is a distant prospect. With diplomatic efforts seemingly stalled, the supply squeeze is likely to deepen.
Shifting Dynamics and Future Supply
Not all economies are equally exposed to the energy commodity disruptions stemming from the Middle East. China, for example, significantly curtailed its LNG imports in the second quarter but has since begun to increase them as electricity demand rose and domestic production faltered. China's diversified import strategy, which includes pipeline gas from Russia, offers a buffer not available to all.
While the European Union also imports Russian LNG, these shipments are slated to cease by the start of 2027 due to an import ban. This cessation could, paradoxically, redirect more LNG towards buyers like China and bolster demand for exports from major suppliers such as the United States and Australia. The U.S. already the world's leading LNG exporter, is actively expanding its liquefaction capacity.
Theoretically, increased supply should temper prices. However, with Qatari output still constrained by the ongoing issues in the Strait of Hormuz, the conflict premium is expected to remain substantial, irrespective of new capacity coming online. Breen anticipates that while the immediate supply situation is tight, it will ease by next year, prompting LNG producers to revisit expansion plans. Approximately 207 million tons of new annual LNG capacity is projected to become operational by 2030. The key question remains whether sufficient demand will materialize to absorb this new supply.
History suggests that demand often rebounds when prices eventually fall, a pattern observed with oil and likely to repeat with natural gas. This resilience stems from gas's critical role in providing on-demand electricity generation and its storability, advantages that even the rapid expansion of wind and solar power cannot fully replicate.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has undeniably injected significant volatility into the global LNG market, challenging prior assumptions of steady demand growth. The immediate impact is a sharp rise in spot prices, driven by supply fears and seasonal demand, which is actively destroying demand in price-sensitive regions like Asia and Europe. This price shock is forcing a difficult conversation about energy security versus affordability.
The implications extend beyond immediate price action. Key related assets to watch include crude oil (CL, WTI), as energy market disruptions often move in tandem. The US Dollar Index (DXY) could also see volatility, influenced by global risk sentiment and energy trade dynamics. Furthermore, the demand destruction observed in LNG could indirectly benefit coal and potentially impact the long-term investment thesis for renewable energy projects if gas remains prohibitively expensive for extended periods.
Traders should monitor developments around the Strait of Hormuz closely, as any further escalation or de-escalation will directly impact shipping costs and insurance premiums for LNG carriers.
