For years, Saudi Arabia possessed a clear, reassuring strategy for safeguarding its vital oil exports: reroute shipments westward via the East-West Pipeline to the Red Sea port of Yanbu. This approach bolstered energy security and lessened dependence on the volatile Strait of Hormuz. However, escalating tensions and security concerns along the Red Sea, particularly near the Bab el-Mandab strait, have brutally exposed a significant vulnerability in this well-established plan. The pipeline itself functions, delivering millions of barrels daily to Yanbu, but the crucial next step – exporting that crude onto global markets – is now severely complicated.

The reality is stark: once oil reaches Yanbu, it must still navigate the Red Sea. With the Bab el-Mandab passage now largely inaccessible due to ongoing Houthi disruptions, Saudi Arabia confronts a formidable logistical quandary. This situation carries profound geopolitical weight, threatening to destabilize international oil flows and reshape strategic energy dynamics.

Navigating the Suez Canal Conundrum

An apparent alternative exists: tankers could sail north through the Suez Canal, a waterway managed by Egypt alongside its own SUMED pipeline. On the surface, this appears a logical fallback. Yet, the practicalities are far more intricate. The Suez route was never designed to absorb the millions of barrels per day of Saudi crude, refined products, and petrochemical exports that typically flow through Bab el-Mandab. While the canal can accommodate increased traffic, doing so promises to create fresh chokepoints, extend transit times considerably, and drive up costs for energy consumers worldwide.

Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline boasts a nameplate capacity of approximately seven million barrels per day. A substantial portion of this volume already serves domestic refineries and petrochemical facilities in the western part of the Kingdom. However, the remaining exports, which have increasingly utilized Yanbu as the primary outlet since past Hormuz-related crises, now face an uncertain future.

This shift to Yanbu previously offered strategic flexibility, allowing exports to continue while minimizing exposure to threats in the Persian Gulf. The current Red Sea vulnerabilities, however, demand a serious reassessment of export infrastructure and contingency planning. If the Bab el-Mandab strait is effectively closed, the strategic advantage Yanbu offered evaporates.

Asian Bound Cargoes Face a Grueling New Reality

For cargoes destined for Europe or the United States, transit via the Suez Canal remains a feasible, albeit potentially more congested, option. The challenge intensifies dramatically for shipments bound for Asia, the primary destination for the vast majority of Saudi crude. These vessels must first travel north through the entire Red Sea to reach the Suez Canal. From there, they must cross into the Mediterranean, embark on a significantly longer journey around the Cape of Good Hope, and only then turn east again towards Asian markets.

This rerouting transforms what was once a roughly three-week voyage into a potential six or even seven-week odyssey. Every extra week at sea translates directly into increased bunker fuel consumption, higher operational expenses, and a substantial increase in working capital requirements for both exporters and importers. This lengthening of routes also creates a hidden structural strain on the global tanker market. Vessels committed to these extended voyages are effectively removed from the available fleet for longer periods, tightening overall transport capacity.

This reduced effective capacity extends beyond just Saudi exports. VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers) diverted to longer routes become unavailable for other Gulf producers. Simultaneously, this situation escalates demand for Suezmax and Aframax tankers, particularly those serving Mediterranean and European routes.

SUMED Pipeline Capacity Falls Short

Adding another layer of complexity are the physical limitations of the Suez Canal itself. Saudi crude exports predominantly rely on VLCCs, each capable of carrying around two million barrels of oil, offering the most economical per-barrel transport cost for long-haul voyages. These behemoths are the backbone of Saudi export logistics.

However, a fully laden VLCC cannot traverse the Suez Canal due to draft restrictions. Despite repeated expansions, the canal's depth remains insufficient for these massive vessels carrying their full cargo. The established solution has been Egypt's SUMED pipeline, which transfers crude from Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea to Sidi Kerir on the Mediterranean, allowing for partial discharge and reloading around the canal transit.

While SUMED typically operates efficiently, its capacity is insufficient to absorb a sudden, sustained diversion of several million barrels per day from Yanbu. The pipeline's effective throughput is rated at 2.3 to 2.5 million barrels per day, more than enough for current commercial flows but falling far short of potential rerouted volumes. Furthermore, SUMED faces existing commitments to other regional producers and routine operational demands.

Consequently, SUMED risks transforming from a strategic solution into another critical bottleneck. Congestion is almost certain to build at Ain Sokhna, as VLCCs requiring partial discharge will occupy valuable berth space, storage, and pumping equipment for extended durations. This will lead to delays and increased demurrage charges. A similar scenario awaits at Sidi Kerir during the reloading process. Each transfer introduces friction into what was once a seamless export chain, turning hours into days and potentially weeks as queues form.

Refined Products Face Compounding Delays

The situation for refined petroleum products, such as diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel exported from Yanbu, is similarly constrained. While these are typically carried on smaller Medium Range (MR) and Long Range (LR) tankers that can transit the Suez Canal directly, they will now face intense competition for canal slots, pilot services, and anchorage capacity alongside crude carriers. The impact on refined product markets could be particularly swift and severe. Refineries and fuel distributors operate with leaner inventories than crude producers, making them highly susceptible to delivery disruptions. This will tighten regional supplies and rapidly inflate wholesale prices, likely outpacing the effects of crude supply interruptions.

The cumulative effect of these logistical constraints is far greater than the sum of their individual parts. They fundamentally erode the flexibility and efficiency that underpin modern oil markets. Energy security is increasingly defined not just by production capacity, but by the resilience of the supply chains connecting production to consumption. While billions have been invested in expanding oil output and infrastructure, the vital maritime corridors have received comparatively less attention. The focus is shifting from barrels produced to barrels that can actually reach customers on time. Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline remains an exceptional asset, but it cannot overcome geographical realities. Without secure passage through the Bab el-Mandab, the Suez Canal and SUMED pipeline become crucial, yet incomplete, fallback options. The next major energy crisis may hinge less on how much oil Saudi Arabia can pump, and more on its ability to efficiently move that oil out of the Red Sea and to dependent global markets. Current oil and product prices are already reflecting this geographical risk, with few clear upper limits in sight.
